This year the HSMA Scholarship committee awarded 4 scholarships; one $3000.00 award, one $2000.00 award, and two $1000.00 awards. The scholarship awards were presented at the HSMA Luncheon at the Sheraton Maui, Coral Reef Room on Thursday, April 15. To date HSMA has awarded over $100,000 in financial scholarships to Maui County's best and brightest graduating high school seniors. The majority of the scholarship funds are raised at the annual HSMA Golf Tournament.
To be eligible for the scholarship, students had to be 2004 graduating high school students and currently enrolled in post secondary academic programs. They had to submit two letters of recommendation, and this year they also had to submit an essay, describing their philosophy as a future professional and how they plan to contribute back to the community in the future, followed by a personal interview with a Scholarship Committee member.
Each winner demonstrated that they have worked diligently to achieve the highest grades while contributing to the community. It was a very tough decision to narrow down to the four out of thirty-six applications we received this year.
The members who donated their time in selecting the winners were Lorraine McCarthy and Jessica Sindoni from the Fairmont Kea Lani Maui, Benjamin Sinclair from the Four Seasons Wailea, James Suehisha from Aloha Airlines, Kelley Kling from the Westin Maui and Puamana Farden from the Hyatt Maui.
